Philanthropic giving is vital to helping Carolinas HealthCare System build upon its level of excellence. Grants from generous organizations such as The Duke Endowment enable CHS to maintain its high standards of quality and distinguished status as a leader in the healthcare community. For many years The Duke Endowment has played a vital role in enhancing a myriad of programs offered at CHS.

In 2015 alone, for example, programs as diverse as behavioral health, community-based wellness and prevention, senior cancer survivorship, and access to care for under-served and under-insured community members benefited from more than $1.3 million in grant funds awarded to CHS by The Duke Endowment.

With funding from The Duke Endowment, CHS Anson, through the Anson Community Partnership for Wellness Prevention, has brought together stakeholders from community-based, corporate, educational, and faith-based organizations in Anson County. Together, they are implementing new health services to reach a broader population, such as behavioral health screenings, counseling, and diet/exercise classes to support healthy habits.

Physicians Reach Out (PRO) is a not-for-profit partnership between Care Ring, the Mecklenburg County Medical Society, CHS, and several area physicians, hospitals, and clinics.  With The Duke Endowment’s support in 2015, PRO will grow to allow partnering organizations to provide critical and often life-saving medical care to our community’s most needy citizens.

With The Duke Endowment’s support, Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute plans to develop and expand the Senior Oncology Initiative. Physicians at LCI will work collaboratively to establish guidelines for research, educational programs, and clinical interventions for older cancer patients treated at LCI.

And, most significantly, in 2015 The Duke Endowment awarded $800,000 to Carolinas HealthCare System to fund the integration of behavioral health services into pediatric primary care practices serving both North and South Carolina. This represents one of the largest gifts Carolinas HealthCare System has received from the organization.

Thanks to Mr. Duke’s vision and the support of The Endowment, CHS is able to provide ongoing specialized services, which are making a difference throughout the region.
