Heart & Vascular Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Thankfully, and with the support of members of the community, cardiologists and cardiac experts at Atrium Health’s Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute have delivered innovative and life-saving heart care to the Carolinas for more than 50 years, consistently receiving local, regional and national recognition.

From outreach and prevention to cardiac rehabilitation to supporting heart transplants, donors make a critical difference in people’s lives:

  • Prevention and outreach. Donors support “Heart of a Champion Day,” when student-athletes in the Charlotte area can receive free electrocardiogram heart screenings.
  • Treatment. Philanthropy supports the work of the Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute, which has more than 50 years of experience in heart care for adults and children. Donations provide equipment and services, as well as education and patient outreach to advance Atrium Health’s heart transplant program.
  • Rehabilitation. Donations help return patients to a healthy lifestyle, including consultations with dietitians, exercise physiologists, nurses and medical directors. Each year, community members support Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute by participating in the Cupid’s Cup 5K Run & Fitness Walk.
  • Pediatric Initiatives. There are also opportunities to support cardiac care and the Congenital Heart Program at Levine Children’s Hospital. Fundraising efforts are underway, led by members of the “Partnership for Pediatric Hearts”, such as The HEARTest Yard Initiative.

You can help make life better for people with heart or vascular disease, or spread awareness, or contribute to vital research. Here’s how:

Direct donation

Many people choose to donate directly to help fight heart and vascular disease, and they can choose different funds based on their interests.

Participate in an event

Every year, thousands of people in our community raise funds to support charitable causes at Atrium Health by organizing, sponsoring, or participating in events throughout the calendar year. One of the primary fundraising events held annually to benefit Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute is the Cupid’s Cup 5K Run & Fitness Walk, held every February around Valentine’s Day.
