In an effort to recognize and honor the extraordinary leadership of Michael Tarwater, who will retire as President and CEO of Atrium Health in June 2016, Atrium Health and Atrium Health Foundation wish to establish a substantial philanthropic endowment in his name. Created in support of a cause for which Mr. Tarwater and his wife, Ann, both share a deep personal commitment, The Tarwater Endowment for Spiritual Care and Education will provide long-term funding for the Spiritual Care and Education Department at CHS.

Mr. Tarwater was instrumental in establishing and expanding the department in the 1980’s and has remained passionate and supportive throughout his career. Mrs. Tarwater is a member of the department’s Professional Advisory Group and is a former student. The Endowment, in accordance with their wishes, will provide annual funding to significantly advance chaplaincy-related education for area clergy, seminarians, and laity of all faiths.
