For Wendy Ruth Paxton, “Keep Pounding” isn’t just a slogan. It’s the story of her life.
Twenty-one years ago, on January 15, 2004, Wendy was diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The disease tested her strength, her spirit, and her future. Thanks to the expert care and compassion of her medical team at Atrium Health Levine Cancer, then led by Dr. Michael Livingston, Wendy not only survived but emerged stronger. She continues to see her care team for routine checks, crediting them with treating her not just as a patient, but as a whole person.
Today, Wendy stands as both a survivor and a supporter, dedicated to giving back to other patients and families facing similar battles. For years, she has participated in the Keep Pounding 5K. “I pound for those still in the fight, for the ones we have lost, and for the caregivers that helped me through my cancer cruise — the one I did not sign up for but had to show up for each day,” she shares. “I pound because I can. There were days during treatment when I couldn’t get out of bed, so running is a treasure I never want to give up.”
For Wendy, the event is more than just a race. It’s a chance to honor the legacy of Carolina Panthers linebacker Sam Mills Jr. and to inspire others fighting cancer. Running alongside her daughter, with her husband and son cheering them on, is one of her most treasured memories and a testament to how far she has come.
Wendy’s journey is a reminder that survivorship is possible, and that every day is worth celebrating. “To patients currently in the fight, I hope to show that there’s life, joy, and strength beyond the diagnosis,” she says. “For survivors, I want to remind them that every year survived is a victory. And to caregivers and loved ones, I wouldn’t be here without you.”
She is also deeply grateful for the donors and supporters who fuel cancer research and patient programs at Atrium Health. “As a 21-year survivor, I’m living proof of what your gifts make possible. You’re not just funding treatments, you’re giving people like me the chance to keep pounding forward.”
On Sunday, September 7, 2025, Wendy will once again lace up her running shoes at the 15th Annual Keep Pounding 5K, presented by Rodgers Builders. Her message to anyone thinking about joining the race is simple and powerful: “You are stronger than you know. Keep Pounding. You’re not alone.”
