Advancing Pediatric Immunodeficiency Research

Since its inception in 2009, the Charlotte Immunodeficiency Center at Carolinas Medical Center has grown to include over 200 patients and families. Under the leadership of Director Niraj C. Patel, MD, MS – a Pediatrician and Immunologist who cares for children and adults with immune problems – a team of highly trained nurses and research staff provide the highest level of care to these patients. Patients with PI cannot fight infections properly, resulting in severe and prolonged infections and hospitalizations. At the Center, they have access to the most current and novel research studies available in the United States.

The Pediatric Immunodeficiency Fund is dedicated to supporting state-of-the-art scientific research and translating that research quickly to the clinical setting in order to benefit local and regional patients. The Fund supports a range of scientific efforts designed to advance immunoglobulin and other therapies as effective treatments for PI.

Overcoming Challenges

In 2009, Dr. Patel founded The Immune Deficiency, Education and Advocacy (IDEA) organization – a local group of children/adults with primary immunodeficiency diseases (PI). The goal of IDEA is to educate patients and the community and to spread awareness of PI, thereby improving the overall health of children/adults by allowing them to overcome medical, financial, and social challenges.

The IDEA organization raises money annually and 100% of the proceeds go directly to local PI children/adults and their families in the Carolinas. Fundraising allows distinguished speakers from all over the United States to educate patients and families, provides fun events for families to interact and learn, and ensures ongoing research studies at Levine Children’s Hospital.

The Role of Charitable Support

By giving to the Pediatric Immunodeficiency Fund, you play a key role in sustaining and building upon our level of excellence in pediatric medicine and medical research. Whether you are a colleague, grateful patient, alumnus of the program, or friend, you can make a difference by helping advance scientific research that translates to the clinical setting.

The Pediatric Immunodeficiency Fund receives contributions through its charitable administrator, Atrium Health Foundation. These gifts may range from personal checks to gifts of securities and charitable bequests.

All are deductible for either income or estate tax purposes, as allowed by IRS guidelines. Please refer to the Guide to Giving (below) for more information on methods of contributing to the Pediatric Immunodeficiency Fund. Particular gift plans may enable you to contribute while retaining residual benefits for you and your heirs.

Opportunities for Giving

Honor Gifts

Families and friends of pediatric patients often express interest in giving donations in honor of a physician, nurse, or other caregivers. In these cases, the names of the honorees should be included with the gift.

Memorial Gifts

The Pediatric Immunodeficiency Fund also welcomes commemorative and memorial contributions in honor or memory of a family member or friend. Gifts from grateful patients, commemorative/memorial contributions, and other forms of support are all promptly acknowledged by Foundation representatives, with notification sent to appropriate individuals as designated by the donor. Amounts of contributions remain confidential.

CASH GIFTS:
Donors often choose immediate gifts by check as the simplest, most direct means of supporting the Pediatric Immunodeficiency Fund. These gifts may range widely in amount and are often directed to specific areas of the donor’s choice. Please send cash gifts to Atrium Health Foundation, 7800 Providence Road, Suite 208, Charlotte, NC 28226.

GIFTS OF SECURITIES/REAL ESTATE:
When considering a substantial gift to the Fund, you may wish to review your securities and real estate holdings. If you hold real estate or securities that have appreciated significantly since their purchase, selling your holdings may trigger substantial capital gains taxes. Donating these same securities or properties to the Fund may enable you to take a tax deduction for their full market value and also avoid capital gains taxes associated with the sale. Contact Atrium Health Foundation at 704-355-4048 for more information.

PLANNED GIFTS THROUGH WILLS & TRUSTS:
Another simple, effective option for philanthropic gifts is to make them through a will or a charitable trust. Encouraged by tax laws, bequests and trusts work particularly well for those who would like to support the Pediatric Immunodeficiency Fund, but who do not wish to make an immediate gift. Contact Atrium Health Foundation at 704-355-4048 for more information.
