More than 1,800 people gathered on September 7, unified by a single goal: to pound out cancer. Participants in the 15th Annual Keep Pounding 5K kicked off the Carolina Panthers’ regular season, running from Levine Cancer Institute to Bank of America Stadium, where they finished on the field, surrounded by Sir Purr, the TopCats, and a crowd of roaring fans.

Hosted by Atrium Health Foundation and the Carolina Panthers and presented by Rodgers Builders, Inc., the event raised more than $123,000 to advance cancer programs at Atrium Health Levine Cancer and Atrium Health Levine Children’s in Greater Charlotte.

Atrium Health Foundation’s Page Stroup helped kick off the race, along with Carolina Panthers representatives and cancer survivors, Lucy Dwindt-Bustos and Lauren Felzer. Both patients share a passion for dance and have endured a courageous journey through cancer treatment at Atrium Health. Their stories represent the very heart of the Keep Pounding 5K — showing the strength, hope, and healing made possible through philanthropy and community support.

We have seen firsthand how the funds raised by this race have impacted those we serve at Levine Children’s and Levine Cancer patients, young and old, who have access to cutting-edge clinical trials that just a few years ago were not available here,” said Stroup. “What we are doing here today gives them and their families hope and inspiration. And that’s what the Keep Pounding mantra is all about!”

John Delony, vice president of construction operations at Rodgers Builders – a 40-year partner of Atrium Health – emphasized the importance of the Keep Pounding phrase. “It represents resilience, strength, and hope that guide us as a community in this fight. Building healthy communities is a mission that both Rodgers and Atrium Health share. Just about everyone knows someone who has battled this disease, and it is our hope that, together, we can make progress for a fight for a cure.”

Over 65 teams came out to show their support, including hospital-department-led, patient, and corporate teams. Team Graham was recognized as the top community team, raising over $2,400, while Rodgers Builders was named the top corporate team. Dale Rudiger secured the top individual fundraiser award for raising more than $5,000.

Since the Keep Pounding initiative began in 2004 to honor the late Carolina Panthers linebacker and coach Sam Mills, the community has raised over $4.7 million to advance cancer research and patient support programs at Atrium Health Levine Cancer and Atrium Health Levine Children’s in Greater Charlotte.
