Nearly all of us have been hit with the sobering news that a loved one has cancer. It may be a parent, grandparent, spouse, close friend, or child. It may even be you. Approximately 40% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes, according to the American Cancer Society.
The good news is that Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute is making significant advancements in detecting and treating many forms of cancer. With more than 25 cancer care locations, Atrium Health provides access to top-ranked physician expertise, groundbreaking clinical trials, and the latest cancer treatments across the Carolinas.
History of Levine Cancer Institute
In 2010, Atrium Health announced an ambitious $500 million, 10-year plan to partner with its network of more than 30 affiliated hospitals to recruit nationally prominent medical teams and share expertise in cancer treatments and research. The program, called Levine Cancer Institute, was established in 2012 with a $20 million gift from The Leon Levine Foundation, launching the evolution of a multi-site, distributed cancer treatment and research facility.
In 2016, The Leon Levine Foundation committed an additional $25 million to support the expansion of Levine Cancer Institute, including construction of a seven-floor 260,000 square-foot advanced outpatient center adjacent to the Institute’s research and administration headquarters, known as Levine Cancer Institute II. The facility, which opened in 2019, has played a critical role in expanding hematologic, thoracic, and gastrointestinal oncology programs available in the region, enhancing translational research capacity in several specialties, and providing space for continued growth of survivorship programs, integrative oncology, rehabilitation, and telemedicine services.
