This fund is dedicated to the support of Atrium Health patients and families who have survived a prolonged episode of respiratory illness and require specialized follow-up home care. Funding may be used to study a variety of issues related to ICU patients and survivors to enhance their physical function and quality of life.

Honoring Dr. Heyer for his distinguished 42 years of service to Atrium Health and his many contributions to the advancement of healthcare and medical education in our community, the fund will also support medical student education, lectureships, and other educational programs that promote and perpetuate meaningful patient-physician relationships.

Upon his retirement in March 2020, Robert A. Heyer, M.D. will have completed more than 40 years of service in the Charlotte community as an exemplary physician, educator, and leader. A Phi Beta graduate of the University of the South, Dr. Heyer earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Medical Honor Society. He joined Charlotte Medical Clinic in 1978 after completing his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He now completes a distinguished career of not only providing comprehensive clinical care to countless patients and their families, but also in educating legions of interns and residents on how to provide the best patient care. Dr. Heyer is a clinical professor for the Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and is highly regarded for his clinical expertise and teaching excellence. Since the Carolina Panthers were founded in 1994, he has served as the team internist and has been on the sideline for every game.

Dr. Heyer was instrumental in the development of Atrium Health’s Pulmonary and Critical Care Division, serving both as Section Chief and Director of Respiratory Care for many years. He is recognized by his peers for his methodical and diligent approach to patient care, with special focus on the importance of the physician-patient relationship. He has been a tireless advocate for utilizing methods of care delivery to improve the quality of his patients’ lives. In his practice, he has always understood and supported a team-based approach to patient care.
