Epic Systems has partnered with Atrium Health since 2014 to support school-based behavioral health in rural communities, help meet the special needs of patients treated at Atrium Health Levine Cancer and Levine Children’s in Charlotte, and to enhance the Project PINK mobile breast cancer screening program. In 2024, Epic Systems also stepped in to fill a critical and immediate need for telehealth and teletherapy services in two rural and under-resourced school districts.
Earlier this year, Epic Systems once again extended direct support to vulnerable patients in our service area, including victims of human trafficking, as well as families lacking sufficient resources to ensure a healthy start for newborns and young children. Two vital initiatives received philanthropic support:
The Atrium Health Human Trafficking Emergency Medical Advocacy Team:
Human trafficking is a growing and often invisible crisis in the Greater Charlotte area—and it’s happening closer to home than many realize. Working directly with patients in our facilities, the Atrium Health Human Trafficking Emergency Medical Advocacy Team works to strengthen the health care safety net against trafficking by improving recognition and response to patients experiencing exploitation. Led by co-medical directors Stacy Reynolds and Emma Evitts, this team offers rapid identification, compassionate intervention, and continued support for victims. This multi-disciplinary group includes physicians, advanced practice providers, social workers, advocates, and a data analyst, all working together to deliver trauma-informed care. In addition, Atrium Health utilizes innovative technology, including a tracking alert system built into electronic medical records, to promote early recognition of trafficking cases and improve patient outcomes. Atrium Health is committed to fostering recovery, restoration, and hope for survivors of human trafficking.
A Healthy Start for Newborns:
With a goal to ensure that every newborn, particularly those in underserved communities, receives crucial support needed for a healthy start in life, the Atrium Health Myers Park OB/GYN and Atrium Health NorthPark OB/GYN teams work to provide patients and families with excellent health care and empower families to ensure their babies receive the best foundation for a thriving future.
Epic Systems has provided funding to offer essential baby equipment such as bassinets and cribs, car seats, strollers, and breast-feeding support. Courtney Buggs, Clinical Social Work Supervisor for both practices, shared how community support impacts patients and families: “Every day we see the needs of our patients and their children, and many have to make difficult choices about where they can stretch their dollar-formula, diapers, clothing, food, and more. It is such a relief when families can receive essential items for their children’s care. We are grateful for partners like Epic Systems for their generosity.”
