Cottie and Cake Return Address

The Cottie & Cake Fund

After a complicated, high-risk pregnancy, Meghan and Steve Hampton lost one of their twin girls, Katelynn, in 2010 during childbirth. Sister Scottlyn was born at a mere two pounds and immediately thrust into the fight of her life. While Scottie’s road to recovery was paved with challenges and setbacks, the Hampton family found strength in each other and the love and support from the staff at Levine Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (NICN). To honor their children and show their support and appreciation for the care they received, Meghan and Steve – along with Meghan’s parents Fran and Don Russ, M.D. – started the “Cottie and Cake” Fund (nicknames that their older daughter Ella gave the twins) to support neonatal and fetal care at Levine Children’s Hospital.

The Cottie & Cake Fund supports the neonatology program at Levine Children’s Hospital as well as the Charlotte Fetal Care Center. How we’ve helped:

Dornier Diode Laser: Charlotte Fetal Care Center was able to purchase this piece of equipment making them the only fetal care center offering Intrautero Fetoscopic Laser Ablation in the entire Southeast.

Neonatal webcam system: Neonatal Intensive Care and Progressive Care Nurseries at Levine Children’s Hospital now have webcams installed at every isolette for real-time viewing of babies while parents are away from the hospital.

NICN Sleep Rooms / Aesthetic and Machine Upgrades: Proceeds from In the NIC of Time, as well as direct contributions to the Cottie & Cake Fund, supported aesthetic and machine upgrades to the six sleep rooms located in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nurseries at Levine Children’s Hospital. Without the upgrades, the rooms could not previously accommodate all families, such as those with twin newborns.

NICN Bead Journey Project: Funds help support a Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery’s Bead Journey Program in which families can acknowledge and celebrate their infant’s accomplishments, emotions, and milestones in a creative, memorable way.
